“In 1867 the very first blue plaque was unveiled to mark the London birthplace of Lord Byron. These iconic heritage plaques can now be found on buildings across the UK, celebrating ‘great figures of the past from all walks of life who have contributed to society’. But do they tell the whole story?” – source
“Rosie’s Plaques is a guerrilla art project staged by women of The Common Lot theatre company. When we discovered that out of more than 300 heritage plaques in Norwich [England] only 25 celebrated non mythical women, we decided to do something about it. In May 2019, under cover of darkness and dressed as Rosie the Riveter, we erected hand made alternative blue plaques on significant buildings in the city.” … including a plaque for Margaret Fountaine!
During my August 1999 home exchange in Durham, England, I made two train trips to the Norwich Castle Museum, Norfolk … to spend time in the non-public area with Margaret’s butterfly collection … but more importantly, her diaries … 12 volumes … from 1878, when she was barely 16 … to 1939, the year before her death in Trinidad, seeking butterflies … see January 22, 2022 – Brilliant … on My Photo a Day Adventure blog
