The 2013 White House Christmas ornament honors Woodrow Wilson, the twenty-eighth president of the United States. The years of Wilson’s two terms in office, from 1913 to 1921, are defined by the unprecedented devastation of World War I, yet Wilson himself would be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919, and his life is distinguished by his resolve that the Great War would truly be the war to end all wars. It was President Wilson’s extraordinary quest for a lasting world peace that inspired the design of our ornament.
The centerpiece of the 2013 ornament is an American Elm tree planted by President Wilson on the North Lawn of the White House on December 18, 1913, just before Christmas. This snowy scene is surrounded by a 24-karat gold-plated frame comprised of elm leaves on the innermost circle, a wreath of olive branches in the middle, and holly leaves bordering Wilson’s monogram on the outermost circle. Two peace doves perch upon the olive branches, bearing banners that announce “The White House, Christmas 2013.”

Saturday, March 19, 2016, 5:59 pm — Perkins had been going back and forth to the litter box, with nothing much happening … when she sat frozen in this pose for several minutes, it was time to call the vet … our Feline Medical Clinic was closed … 24-hour Columbia River Veterinary Specialists had to do … walk-in, no appointments … luckily, fairly close … south on I-205, west on Padden Parkway …
8:40-11:00pm … CRVS … large, pleasant front desk, waiting area, modern design, fireplace … Perk went back for exam, blood, etc. tests … Met with veterinarian in back side room to view x-ray … no obstructions, whew … UTI, urinary tract infection … sent out blood, urine samples to lab … urine culture results will take several days … gave her subcutaneous fluids … took home antibiotic (liquid, one week), pain med (syringe, every 8 hours, for a few days) … Perk timed this perfectly … I’m on spring break for next two weeks …
11:52 pm … Perkles playing with the empty pain med syringe … First dose (plus antibiotic) when we got home … Wrapped her in big blue towel on bed … Good about syringe, dropper in her mouth … She was REALLY lively for quite a while, zooming around …

The trick is to push and pull latched edges.
My plan, keep the door open, food inside, overnight … Bold Teeny charged right in …
Cautious Perkins took longer … By 7:00 am the next morning she walked in to eat … surrounded by familiar SuperScratcher, boxes and water dish …
Part 2 of the plan … Move the kitten condo kennel to the garage (easy with 4 small rollers) a few hours before the carpet cleaner arrived (between 10:00-noon) … Equipped with litter box, mid-size box with pillow, water, purple cat carrier for sitting on top or inside … all the comforts of home … EXCEPT, it was a strange location …
The simplest, putting in Perk (in her carrier) … Opened Teen’s carrier as close as possible to the side door … held her neck scruff to guide her into the kennel … Whew! … Then opened Perk’s carrier inside the kennel … Two wide-eyed kittens … Left the garage light and radio on (classical music), flannel sheet on top of kennel, cardboard underneath.
Cleaning began at 11:45, with 4-5 hours to dry … good timing for multiple errands … Back at 4:00 … carpet almost dry, turned on heaters … Perk and Teen read my mind when I went to get them at 7:00 pm … They both went into Perk’s carrier in the kennel. Convenient! … Happy to go back home!
Thursday, June 27, 2013, 2:30 p.m. — Perkins this afternoon … looking for a big yellow butterfly that flits swiftly by once in a while … And I’m on a two-week break before summer quarter starts, July 8! Will work 8 weeks, 4 days a week, 4 hours a day, 2:00-6:00 p.m. What a great schedule for a night owl … These are extra hours outside the Sept.-June 9-month contract. Extra jingle for the savings purse. Thanks, Suze Orman!
Took Perk and Teen to the Feline Medical Clinic for an annual wellness exam yesterday, 11:00 a.m. Had their kitten vaccinations after I got them from the Humane Society, July 2007. As indoor cats, haven’t felt the need to go back. Now that they’re mature … 6 years old! … it’s time to watch for age-related changes.
Perk was the shy one. Teen watched everything going on … The vet and assistant noted how observant she was.
Results? … “You have gorgeous cats!” … Coats in great condition (no shedding!) … Wellness Indoor Health cat food has made all the difference … No meat by-products, corn, wheat, soy … Found Wellness a few years ago, after researching more natural dry cat food than what’s in grocery stores … And the litter box is much more pleasant, too! … Buy it at Petco, across the river at Jantzen Beach … Save a smidge, Oregon is sales-tax free.
To save $$ on bottled water, bought a Brita water filter pitcher. Filtered tap water, cleaner, tastes better … Perk and Teen drink it, too.
So, the kitten-mittens are scheduled for an upper respiratory vaccination every 3 years and rabies annually. Even as indoor cats, state law requires rabies … Do I anticipate a bat flying in the house? … No … You can opt out, but in an emergency, clinics could deny treatment without it … Oh, yeah, a bat did zip through an open upstairs window at the Wilson River house (1960) … nothing since then!
