“I vant … to be … alone!” … or maybe not … Greta Garbo, John Gilbert … Flesh and the Devil, 1926 …

“The most famous quip attributed to Greta Garbo is short and sardonic: “I want to be alone.” But the actress, who made a practice of shunning reporters, premieres and fan mail, claimed that she had been misquoted. “I never said, ‘I want to be alone,’” she explained, according to a 1955 piece in LIFE magazine. “I only said, ‘I want to be let alone! There is all the difference.”

Green Grow the Leaves … & Monitors

cats_window_trees_2013_04-14_600pSunday, April 14, 2013, 12:45 pm:

This is one week ago, April 14 … What a cozy picture, with the sun radiating on orange Perkins … What are their 4 ears aimed at? … A cheery, industrious robin, safe from feisty felines on the other side of the window.

The trees are getting greener and greener. See how less leaf-ified they were two weeks earlier, March 30, in There’s a New Monitor in Town.

And speaking of computer monitors and getting leaf-ified … There’s a bloomin’ bigger “new monitor in town”. The 24″ Dell was so immensely impressive, with color clarity and clear glass screen … It just needed to be a tad larger to more easily read a 2-page spread in Media History Digital Library’s Motion Picture magazine, for example.

cats_window_27in_dell_2013_04_14_cropSo, off to Best Buy online to jump up to a 27″ Dell. Picked it up at Jantzen Beach April 8. Just like its little brother (which was returned), it’s a winner!

Notice who’s on the monitor desktop screen? … It’s larger than life size … Perkins!

Now that I’m satellite-tv-free, this is just the right size to watch PBS shows online … free! The second season of Call the Midwife began a few weeks ago, and voila, there it is a birthin’ online. Other over the air, broadcast channels do the same, so I’ve got NBC’s The Office and Parks and Rec at my keyboardtips for a limited time after they originally air (the only two I regularly look forward to on the non-PBS networks).

I’ll leave you with a few fine feathered friends fotos … two robins and a Steller’s jay just outside the bedroom window … from May 5, 2006. Maybe the robin Teeny and Perk were staring down is related … Enlarge the fotos and you’ll see the the robin on the left has a curly topknot of feathers … and the jay has a dark round seed in his beak.

There’s a New Monitor in Town

new_monitor_DellS2440L_cats_window_crop_700p_2013_03_30Sunny Saturday, March 30, 2013, 6:15 pm – Hey cats! Lookee here! Look .. how crisp and clear … the new monitor screen … Look behind you …

They’re more interested in the crisp and clear real world outside. They’re don’t care about Windows XP or Windows 7 or even Windows 8 … THEIR window never crashes or needs updating … Cats … smarter than the average person!

Here’s the tale of the new monitor, a 24″ Dell:

  • Love my old Dell monitor. Sturdy, reliable, great color, 20″ flat panel. SUCH an improvement over the behemoth CRT monitor it replaced (around 2004). After discovering Media History Digital Library this week, Li’l Dell wasn’t big enough to open two pages of a magazine for easy reading, such as “The Stars Who Stand Out”, Motion Picture, March 1931. The stars who stand out … 3 of my favorites, Clara Bow, Charles Bickford and Gary Cooper … Coop in the early years was divine in the looks deparment … Bick had the acting chops.

motionpicture_1931_03_stars_who_stand_out

  • How to justify getting a new monitor … Hmmm … I had an extra fistful of $$ … One of those faculty perks. Attended an Outcomes Assessment workshop Wednesday and Thursday. It’s spring break, we’re off-contract, thus the payment … not just for sitting there. Kitty and I worked on our program level info literacy assessment project for the AA transfer and tested 2 draft rubrics on the CTEC/LIBR 115 final project.
  • Timing was perfect, sales-wise … March Madness discounts! … Thursday afternoon, checked online for reviews, prices … Got to BestBuy (by the PDX airport) before they closed at 9:00. How cool is that … order online and zip into the store to pick it up … plus no sales tax on the Oregon side … and it’s a straight shot down 205 in less that 20 minutes. That’s why I like driving later at night when there’s no traffic.
  • Set up the HP 23″ monitor … and … underwhelmed … Flimsy plastic stand. Screen is matte, like Li’l Dell, but images NOT crisp, look faded.

Silhouette of Perkins this afternoon … looking out the north-facing kitchen window …
