Friday, July 26, 2013, 7:34 pm — Teeny thinks my new Marimekko Pippurikerä … “pepper ball” … sheets are magnificently cool … Cat tested and approved!
The sage and “creamy white of Annika Rimala’s Pippurikerä (“pepper ball”) print complement one another as the symmetrical circles seem to fold in on themselves — weaving mesmerizing design with a crisp color palette. The deep fitted Marimekko sheet set features Rimala’s detailed 1963 print and is made from 100% cotton.”
Quote from FinnStyle, but I got the sheets from Marimekko U.S. this week. A major sale … 60% off … $43. Even with shipping, $13.50, it was $30 less than FinnStyle’s free shipping sale price.
Since visiting FinnStyle in Minneapolis last June [2012], have transitioned my basic old sheets to Marimekko sets. Supporting my Finnish heritage with Finnish design bed linens … “works of art”.
Love that the patterns I have are Marimekko (established 1951) classics:
Silkkikuikka – “Great Crested Grebe”, an elegant water bird with ornate head plumes – Maija Isola, 1961
Unikko – “poppy” – Maija Isola, 1964
Heinä – “hay” – Maija Isola, 1957
Pippurikerä – “pepper ball” – Annika Rimala, 1963
“The Unikko pattern is Marimekko’s most iconic design. The splashy print came about after Armi Ratia announced that Marimekko did not manufacture floral prints. Maija Isola, always the trailblazer and rabble-rouser, designed Unikko as a protest against Ratia’s statement. The result was the bold, powerful and unapologetic flowers of Unikko. The print came out in 1964, disproving Ratia’s statement and ushering in a new era for Marimekko.
“Unikko is easily the most recognizable symbol of Marimekko and its popularity has not dwindled over the years. New color waves are created every year, continuing the legacy of Isola’s brilliant design.” — www.finnishdesign.com
“Marimekko is not about trendy fashion. We make timeless and lasting products, which, by chance, are often very fashionable.” — Marimekko – Unfold the Story
